Abstract

The aim of the study is to present the experience in Bulgaria in the field of higher education in librarianship, as part of the educational and cultural tradition of the country. The emphasis is on the work of Todor Borov, a key figure in this process. Brought up in the German librarianship school, T. Borov worked over several decades from the 20s to the 70s of the 20th century, determined to realize a vast cultural projects, including the creation of a modern national library, modern bibliographic information system and modern library education. Traced here are the conditions when higher librarianship education becomes an institution as an academic subject at the University of Sofia. The paper presents the transformations in the model of this education, introduced by T. Borov in the 60s, which led to real integration in the training of specialists in library science and informatics, pointing to the need of parallel full academic education - both as a branch and as librarianship education. This model has changed the educational paradigm from library education towards library information science education, and placed Bulgaria among the first countries in Europe, to realize this early transition in real terms.
