Abstract:
The study presents the results of a survey of the relationship between sex-role stereotypes
and young Bulgarians’ perceptions of the various ethnic and social groups. The research was done
in the end of 2004 with about 400 students with different majors. The model of mixed stereotypes
is confirmed: it is the result of historic and social circumstances but on the level of critical
dimensions (competency, warmth, status, and competitiveness) they are based on the variables
which have interested researches of prejudices for a long time. The link which has been registered
by S. Fiske et al. is observed, too: pespondents’ own group is perceived as competent while the
out-group is seen as warm but not so competent. The specific result for Bulgarian culture is that
ethnic Bulgarians are not identified as competitive in the same extent as the other groups.
