Abstract:
The paper presents a comprehensive and systematic study of the development of museums in Bulgaria during the state socialism (1944-1989). It analyzes the symbiosis of both ideologies (communism and nationalism) within the museum institution. Special attention is paid to the measures taken by the Bulgarian Com-munist Party in respect to the ideological transformation of museums. It examines the structure of the socialist museum and the imposition of dialectical-materialist approach to exhibitions, as well as the mandatory parts of the exhibitions such as the workers’ revolutionary movement and the socialist development.
