Abstract: This investigation presents the results from the empirical study of the effects of risk and
protective factors in the self-regulation of the rehabilitatory process in cardio-vascular diseases.
The empirical study has a longitudinal design and has been conducted in the UMPHAT St.
Ekaterina, Sofia in two phases – preoperative phase (Study 1) and postoperative phase (Study 2
– retesting). In theoretical terms, the following is presented: 1. the transition from the traditional
uni-dimensional to the necessary multidimensional explanatory models for predicting the cardiovascular
pathogenesis; 2. the development of the Self-regulation model of Leventhal for illness
representations (SRM Leventhal, 1970; Leventhal, Meyer & Nerenz, 1980; Leventhal et al.,
1984; Cameron & Leventhal, 2003) to its contemporary enriched variations in the The strength
model of self-regulation (Schwarzer, 2008; Hagger, 2009; Sniehotta, 2009) and in the Temporal
Self-Regulation Model (Temporal Self-Regulation Theory) (Cameron, 2010; Hall et al. 2010;
Salis, 2010).
The Type D Personality or the dispositional fixative of the ‘D-istressed’ personality is presented
based on the stable positioning of the Negative affectivity and the Social inhibition (Denollet, 1998a,
2000, 2005; Denollet & Van Heck, 2001; Pedersen & Denollet, 2003).
The empirical study that has been conducted proves our leading investigative hypothesis:
patients, in whom high levels of the studied risk factors were registered – Cardiac depression,
Clinical anxiety, Negative affectivity and Social inhibition of the Type D Personality – demonstrate,
respectively, lower levels of adaptation in handling heart diseases and adaptation to the necessary
interventions.
For the purposes of the study, a primary adaptation of the specialized for the cardio-vascular
diseases psychological questionnaires and scales was conducted – Type D personality – Scale 14 (DS
14, 2004) of Denollet et al., Cardiac Depression Scale (CDS, 1993) of Hare et al. and Short Illness
Perception Questionnaire (BIPQ) of Broadbent et al., 2006.

Abstract: Psychoanalytic ideas of development and adaptation are presented. The perspective of early
child-parent relations as structuring blocks of personality is applied to reveal the role of early
interactive experience on adaptive/maladaptive functioning. Data from the assessment of 134 children
140
(age 6–15) made with apperception technique RATC are obtained. The Bulgarian version of two
multidimensional instruments measuring defense mechanisms DSQ (Bond et. al., 1993) and coping
strategies COPE (Carver et. al., 1989) of the parents are used. Questionnaires were administrated to
46 fathers and 71 mothers. Results show reliability close to the original versions, and correlations of
the scales prove hypotheses of constructs and their interdependence.
Data obtained by correlation and regression analyses support the idea of the indirect influence
of parents’ adaptive functioning on their children. Two models, based on the representations of either
objects and/or relations and the process of identification are suggested to reveal different paths of
influence. First explaining similarities in adaptive strategies through identification of the child with
the idealized aspect of the parents; second is applying the idea of development of complementary role
position in highly affectively charged situations as an emotional regulation mechanism in children.

Abstract: sexual behaviour and health promotion in the Bulgarian sociocultural context (n = 197, 18–22
years old). The aim of the empirical study is to explore the role of the components of the PMT on
the formation of intentions to use condoms among university students. The study is based on 20-item
instrument to assess PMT components (cognitive appraisals, fear, maladaptive coping, and behavioural
intentions) in relation to AIDS and condom use (Ho, 2000) and 8-item scale of past sexual behaviour
120
(Ingledew and Ferguson, 2007). The results suggest that an effective focus of the prevention programs
would be the self-efficacy and response effectiveness of the condoms, rather than the fear. Adding
a scale of past sexual behaviour permits to attain higher percentage of explained variance over and
beyond PMT variables. The role of some sociodemographic factors is also assessed.

Abstract: The study presents results from empirical research on the psychological characteristics of career
choice in early adulthood. The research is based on the multidimensional model for occupational
choice, developed by J. Chartrand, St. Robbins, W. Morril and K. Boggs, measuring career indecisiveness
which consists of informational and personal-emotional factors, interacting when people decide
on a career. In order to examine the convergent validity and the external reliability of the instrument
we have used correlation analyses with John Holland’s Vocational Identity Scale, Rosenberg Self-Esteem
Scale, the Goal Instability Scale and Spielberger State-Trait Anxiety Inventory. When adaptating
92
the model for Bulgarian sociocultural environment, high psychometrical indicators were registered,
which gives grounds for successful use of the model by consultants in distinguishing the reasons for
the indecisiveness in career choice.
